2026 Theme: Bridges and Barriers

Submission Deadline: January 12, 2026

In 2025, the global community found itself navigating the tension between unprecedented connectivity and persistent divides. From breakthroughs in digital diplomacy and climate cooperation, to contested borders and competing interests, the global order continues to oscillate between bridges and barriers. For the next issue of Hemispheres, we invite submissions that explore this duality as it manifests across international affairs. Submitted papers should consider how barriers—geographic, ideological, economic, or technological—emerge and endure, and how bridges—through diplomacy, innovation, or cooperation—are constructed to transcend them.

Submission Preparation Checklist:

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines

1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it under consideration for another journal (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.

3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

4. The text is in Times New Roman; uses a 12-point font; double spaced; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines:

Papers will be evaluated based upon sound analysis, originality of argument, and novelty of research. Prospective authors are encouraged to consult previous issues of Hemispheres for examples of quality submissions. Below are the requirements for submission:

1. Your submission must be between 5000-8000 words

2. Your work must have been completed during undergraduate study, either in the US or internationally. Authors must be within one year of having finished their undergraduate degree.

3. Citations should be structured according to the Chicago Manual of Style, with references as endnotes as opposed to footnotes. Submissions lacking full citations will not be accepted.

4. Every paper must include an abstract and any relevant acknowledgements.

5. Place name, email, telephone number, and affiliated institution on front cover page.
